Serving Customers from the Center of the U.S.: M-D Building Products

From stopping drafts and keeping out unwanted bugs, to creating beautiful floor transitions, and more… M-D Building Products help customers create a more comfortable home environment.

Commerce sat down with Josh Plotkin, Executive Vice President and Owner of M-D Building Products, and Dennis Pruitt, Senior Vice President of Economic Development at the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, to discuss how M-D Building Products makes 90% of their products in North America and stays core to Oklahoma with around 700 jobs at their Oklahoma City location.

Q: Tell us about M-D Building Products.

Josh Plotkin, Executive Vice President and Owner, M-D Building Products: M-D Building Products was founded in 1920 at the Oklahoma State Fair. Our founder’s name was L.A. Maclanburg and he had a salesperson, Ferg Duncan, which is where you get the M-D: Maclanburg-Duncan. It’s been a family-owned business and went through three generations of a prior family business, and then was acquired by my father in 2000.

We specialize in manufacturing and weather strip products. We do aluminum extrusion, vinyl extrusion, downstream finishing such as powder coating, anodizing, CNC finishing. And we also run a distribution network. Our main customers are the big box stores – Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menards. We have a caulking channel where we’re selling mostly through pro paint. And then we also have a pro channel where we’re selling more to larger construction type jobs.

The customers are located really all over the country. We have a wide variety of people that we service. But we try to stay core to Oklahoma as much as we can.

Q: How has M-D Building Products contributed to the Oklahoma City community & economy?

Dennis Pruitt, Senior Vice President of Economic Development, Greater Oklahoma City Chamber: We’re so fortunate to have M-D Building products in Oklahoma City. They employ somewhere around 700 people. They have a massive facility near downtown Oklahoma City. It’s a family-owned business. So those are the types of success stories that we like to highlight.

Ninety percent of their products are made right here in North America. There’s so much downstream supply chain that they impact, the jobs, the lives that they’ve changed and standard of manufacturing that they’ve set for across the country.

Q: What benefits do you have by being located in Oklahoma?

Josh Plotkin: Oklahoma, it’s a great place to do business because it’s so business friendly. It’s located centrally in the United States, so it’s very easy to ship products in all directions. And a lot of our government employees are willing to help. And there’s programs out there for companies like ours. It also has a great employee base. The cost of living is good. There’s so many pros to being in the state of Oklahoma, and we’ve just found great partnership and have been really dedicated to staying in the state.
