Russia Accuses Ukraine of Timing Oil Cutoff to Influence Hungary Elections
Oleg Tyapkin, head of the 3rd European Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, told a Russian state news agency that Hungary was "justifiably outraged" after Kyiv stopped oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline. He added, "It can hardly be considered a mere coincidence that this provocative act was organized precisely now, during the final stage of the election campaign."
Tyapkin cited other incidents as examples of interference, including the reported bugging of Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto’s phone by Ukrainian special services and criticisms of Prime Minister Viktor Orban from EU officials. He also claimed that Hungary’s media frequently publishes false reports alleging Russian attempts to influence the elections, scheduled for April 12.
The diplomat criticized proposals from Czech Republic and Slovakia to inspect the pipeline, noting that even the Slovak ambassador in Kyiv was reportedly denied access. "What does this indicate? That the Ukrainian regime has something to hide," he asserted.
Tyapkin further suggested that Ukrainian authorities, allegedly aided by European bureaucrats, would intentionally delay the restoration of the pipeline, saying: "everything points to the fact that the Ukrainian authorities, with the connivance of Eurocrats, will try to delay the pipeline's return to operation as long as possible."
