US, India Discuss Bilateral Relations, Regional Issues
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing regional and global concerns, as reported by Jaishankar on the US social media platform, X.
The two leaders met during the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, where they had a chance to engage in dialogue.
Jaishankar is representing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who participated in the summit virtually, at the 20th East Asia Summit also held in Malaysia’s capital.
The External Affairs Ministry highlighted that the meeting between Jaishankar and Rubio comes as the US and India have resumed trade talks after a pause, sparked by disputes over 50% tariffs placed on Indian goods by the Trump administration.
These tariffs were partly in response to India’s increased purchases of Russian oil amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine.
India has significantly raised its imports of discounted Russian crude oil since 2022, positioning itself as one of Moscow’s key energy customers despite the sanctions imposed by Western nations.
In 2024, the US remains India’s largest trade partner, with the total trade in goods and services estimated to reach approximately $212.3 billion.
