Jaishankar, Rubio Discuss Bilateral Relations
The two leaders engaged in talks about enhancing bilateral relations, alongside addressing regional and global issues. Jaishankar shared updates on the meeting via the US social media platform X.
This meeting took place on the sidelines of the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.
According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Jaishankar is representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 20th East Asia Summit, which is also taking place in Malaysia.
Prime Minister Modi is attending the ASEAN summit virtually.
Last month, the United States and India resumed trade negotiations, following tensions over the imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian goods by the Trump administration.
These tariffs were partly a response to India’s increased purchase of Russian oil amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Since 2022, India has significantly boosted its imports of discounted Russian crude oil, becoming one of Moscow's top customers despite Western sanctions.
The United States remains India’s largest trading partner, with trade in goods and services estimated to reach $212.3 billion in 2024.
